Morpho-anatomical features of underground systems in six Asteraceae species from the Brazilian Cerrado Anais da ABC (AABC)
Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz; Cury,Graziela.
In the Brazilian Cerrado (neotropical savanna), the development of bud-bearing underground systems as adaptive structures to fire and dry periods can comprise an important source of buds for this ecosystem, as already demonstrated in the Brazilian Campos grasslands and North American prairies. Asteraceae species from both woody and herbaceous strata have subterranean organs that accumulate carbohydrates, reinforcing the adaptive strategy of these plants to different environmental conditions. This study aims to analyse the morpho-anatomy of underground systems of six species of Asteraceae (Mikania cordifolia L.f. Willd., Mikania sessilifolia DC, Trixis nobilis (Vell.) Katinas, Pterocaulon alopecuroides (Lam.) DC., Vernonia elegans Gardner and Vernonia...

Plant regeneration from proroplasts of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) via somatic embryogenesis Scientia Agricola
Monteiro,Mariza; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz; Valarini,Maria José; Oliveira,Carlos Alberto de; Vieira,Maria Lucia Carneiro.
Alfalfa is one of the most frequently studied species from the production of tissue culture-derived embryos point of view. In this study, five alfalfa cultivars were analyzed with reference to their ability to regenerate plants from protoplast cultures via somatic embryogenesis. Plant regeneration from leaf-derived protoplasts isolated from the cultivar Rangelander was achieved using a protocol defined for alfalfa cell suspension-derived embryogenesis. Because of its high efficiency, this procedure is recommended for protoplast electroporation-mediated genetic transformation of alfalfa.

O camu-camu [Myrciaria dubia (Humb., Bonpl.

Propagation studies in Smilax fluminensis Steud. (Smilacaceae) Ciência Rural
Soares,Anielca Nascimento; Novembre,Ana Dionísia da Luz Coelho; Martins,Aline Redondo; Piedade,Sônia Maria de Stefano; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz.
Smilax L. species, popularly known in Brazil as salsaparrilha, have been used in folk medicine as tonic against rheumatism and as anti-syphilitic since the sixteenth century; however, until today, their roots have been explored in an extractive way. The aim of this study was to analyze the propagation of Smilax fluminensis aiming to meet the demand and to propose procedures for its sustainable management. It was analyzed the percentage of seed germination, rooting of aerial and subterranean stem cuttings and plant resprouting capacity after removal of the shoots. The monitoring lasted one year. Seeds were subjected to temperatures: 25°C, 30°C, 20-30°C and 20-35°C under a daily photoperiod of eight hours and in the absence of light. For rooting the stem...

Thiamethoxam on the histological characteristics of sugarcane young roots Ciência Rural
Martins,Raphael Gonçalves; Martins,Maria Bernadete Gonçalves; Silva,João Marcelo; Pereira,Marcelo Andrade; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz; Castro,Paulo Roberto de Camargo e.
Thiamethoxam is a systemic insecticide from the neonicotinoid group, nitroguanidin family which affects the nicotinic receptor acetyl choline in the insect membrane, wounding the nervous system and causing the death of the insect. It was used with success in the control of initial pests of several crops. It was considered that thiamethoxam has a bioactivator effect, because in the absence of insects promoted increase in vigor, development and productivity of crops. This work was carried out to verify if thiamethoxam causes histological changes in sugarcane roots. In this work, it was used optical microscopy, images arrest, tissue biometrics and statistical analysis, in young roots of sugarcane RB 83 5486 after the treatments with different thiamethoxam...

Ultrastructural analysis of in vitro direct and indirect organogenesis Rev. Bras. Bot.
Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz; Machado,Silvia R..
This is a comparative study of the ultrastructural characteristics of the cells involved in the organogenesis in vitro of Bauhinia forficata Link (indirect system) and Glycine max (L.) Merrill (direct system). B. forficata calli after 30 days culture and G. max meristemoids after 10 days culture were prepared for ultrastructural analysis using conventional methods. Concentrically arranged rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and plastids containing starch grains were seen during G. max and B. forficata organogenesis. The amitotic process, the presence of plastids around the nucleus and nuclear envelope with conspicuous pores were found in B. forficata.
